    On the occasion of Lévy Gorvy’s first solo exhibition with Adrian Piper, on view at the New York gallery between September 14th and October 21st, this catalogue examines themes the artist has explored throughout her career—the intersubjective and institutional formation of identity, including the categories of race and gender; racism as a type of xenophobia; and conceptions of political responsibility. Adrian Piper includes an essay co-authored by Begum Yasar, Senior Director at Lévy Gorvy, and Aliza Shvarts, an artist and PhD candidate in Performance Studies at New York University, that examines Piper’s practice in light of current events and the xenophobic residue from the 58th United States presidential election. The catalogue also features extensive documentation of the works in the exhibition, including It’s Just Art (1980) and The Mythic Being series (1973–76), as well as images of the first-ever installation of the site-specific work, Here (2008/2017).

  • Pat Steir: Kairos

    This book explores Pat Steir’s most recent Kairos series of immersive paintings, installed at Lévy Gorvy in New York between September 7 and October 21, 2017. The series evolved out of Steir’s seminal Waterfall paintings, which proved her medium could “express itself as something non-objective.” As early as 1987, Steir poured, threw, or dragged mixtures of pigment across her canvases, shifting her focus to the natural movements of paint applied to canvas rather than deliberate mark-making. The book offers an intimate introduction to Steir’s most recent paintings and includes a conversation between Steir and Sylvère Lotringer, the founder ofSemiotext(e), as well as three poems that Steir published in the “Schizo-Culture” issue of the magazine; “Trance Abyss,” a poem by Anne Waldman; an essay by art historian and curator Courtney J. Martin; a detailed chronology illustrated by archival images; and high-quality photographs of Lévy Gorvy’s installations in both New York (currently on view), and London (2016).
