Francesco Clemente: Fifty One Days On Mount Abu

This artist’s book reproduces Francesco Clemente’s series of watercolours, Fifty One Days on Mount Abu. In 1995, Clemente spent 51 days alone near the Temple of Kali on Mount Abu in India, watching the monsoon rains transforming the landscape and the ensuing rebirth of nature. Each day he completed a watercolour and took notes on his experiences. The book was published on the occasion of the exhibition of these works at Anthony d'Offay Gallery, London, in 1997. Each copy includes a signed, original lithograph, titled Falling Stars, and features poetic excerpts from the artists' travel notes.

‘Only to keep count of passing days

of understanding, of not understanding

a year of heat beyond the gates of fear

lingering on thresholds of sweat,

excessive urination, a burning chest

and later back into exhaustion

kind maternal everstanding prelude

to sleepiness, death of contemplation.’
