Published by Dominique Lévy Gallery in collaboration with Axel Vervoordt Gallery, this volume is the first definitive English-language monograph on the work of Kazuo Shiraga. This extensive publication includes new scholarship on Shiraga’s artistic practice and the ways in which it was inspired by both Western action painting and ancient Japanese Buddhist ritual; previously unpublished archival material pertaining to Shiraga’s career; and selected writings by Shiraga in English translation. The final section of the book features a complete facsimile of the artist’s personal scrapbook of photographs documenting his public performances—a rarely exhibited archive never before available to a general public.
